Chokes are air- or iron-core coils that function as inductive reactances. Chokes are used for current limiting and reactive power generation. Chokes are built as single-phase or three-phase.

In an air-core choke, the magnetic flux travels entirely in air, so the inductance is independent of current. Air-core chokes are explicitly used at high frequencies.

When a larger inductance is needed than can be achieved with an air-core choke, the choke is equipped with a core made of a ferromagnetic material. In a laminated core implementation, the core is assembled from transformer laminations. The core types are those used in our EI and UI transformers. High-power chokes are built in their own core type series. Class B is commonly used as the temperature class. Choke sizes can be selected using the energy values in the choke tables. As an example, let a single-phase choke have L = 25 mH and IRMS = 10 A.

Calculating as energy gives LI²RMS = 2.5 Ws. From the choke table, type EI 120/53.7 is selected, whose energy (2.88 Ws) is the largest value that is greater than the calculated value. When installing unenclosed chokes, it is essential to note that stray flux can cause acoustic phenomena in nearby metal objects. Due to the location of the air gap, the inductance of EI-core chokes increases if they are installed directly on a magnetically highly conductive (e.g., iron) base.
